Secrets get heavier the longer they are kept. The Bible says again and again that people were not made to carry hidden things alone. These verses are about confessing to God and to another person, and about choosing a friend who will help you stay the course. They come from the World English Bible. Pray the short prayer at the end.

**James 5:16 gives the instruction and the reason together.** James writes to believers scattered abroad: confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The confession is meant to lead to prayer and to healing, not to exposure for its own sake. (James 5:16)

## Hidden things lose their grip when spoken

James 5:16 puts confession and prayer side by side, with healing as the aim. The picture is of believers who are honest with each other, not people who put on a good face in the same room. Proverbs 28:13 says the same from the other side: whoever conceals his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.

Notice the two verbs in the proverb, confess and renounce. Telling is the first half. The second half is turning from the thing, and that is easier with someone who knows.

> Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.
> (James 5:16)

> He who conceals his sins doesn’t prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.
> (Proverbs 28:13)

- Start with God, then choose one person, not many.

## Choose the right person

Proverbs says as iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens his friend. It also says that wounds from a friend are faithful, while the kisses of an enemy are profuse. A good accountability partner will sometimes say what you do not want to hear, and will say it because they are on your side.

Proverbs 15:22 notes that plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. Look for someone steady and discreet, who can keep a confidence and who will ask a direct question. Being nice is not enough. A pastor or a trained counselor is also a good choice, especially when the struggle feels heavy.

> Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend’s countenance.
> (Proverbs 27:17)

> Better is open rebuke than hidden love. The wounds of a friend are faithful, although the kisses of an enemy are profuse.
> (Proverbs 27:5-6)

> Where there is no counsel, plans fail; but in a multitude of counselors they are established.
> (Proverbs 15:22)

## Two are better than one

Ecclesiastes 4 says that two are better than one, because if one falls the other can lift up his companion. Woe to him who is alone when he falls. The passage assumes that falling happens, and that having someone there is what makes the difference.

Galatians 6 describes the other person's side. If someone is caught in a fault, those who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness, and carry each other's burdens. Accountability in the Bible is restoration, not surveillance.

Telling someone is often the point where the cycle changes. Secrecy feeds shame, and shame pushes people back toward the habit they hoped to leave. Saying the truth to one safe person breaks that loop, and it gives your prayers someone to stand beside. Start small if you need to: one honest sentence to one trusted person is enough.

> Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.
> (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)

> Brothers, even if a man is caught in some fault, you who are spiritual must restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, looking to yourself so that you also aren’t tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
> (Galatians 6:1-2)

## Honesty in the early church

Acts 19 describes believers in Ephesus who came, confessing and declaring their deeds, and brought their books of magic together and burned them in the sight of all. They did not just say sorry. They removed what tied them to the old life.

Hebrews 3:13 asks believers to encourage one another day by day, so that none is hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 adds: encourage one another and build each other up. A good partner makes you braver, and checks in on ordinary days as well as hard ones.

> Many also of those who had believed came, confessing and declaring their deeds. Many of those who practiced magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. They counted their price, and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver.
> (Acts 19:18-19)

> but exhort one another day by day, so long as it is called “today”, lest any one of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
> (Hebrews 3:13)

> Therefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as you also do.
> (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

- Agree on what to ask each week, and answer honestly even when the answer is bad.

## A prayer to say with these verses

Lord, I am tired of carrying this alone. Give me courage to speak, and a friend who is faithful and kind. Help me to be honest and to leave the hidden things behind. Heal me through your people. Amen.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I have to confess to a person, or only to God?

James 5:16 tells believers to confess to one another, and Proverbs 28:13 speaks of confessing and renouncing. Many people also find that saying it aloud to a trusted person changes how it feels to carry it.

### Who should I tell?

Someone steady, discreet and honest, who will pray with you and ask direct questions. Proverbs 27:6 says wounds from a friend are faithful.

### What if I am afraid of how they will react?

That fear is common. Galatians 6:1 says the aim of the other person is to restore you gently. Start with someone who has shown kindness, and tell them what help you want.

### What does an accountability partner do?

They ask real questions, pray with you, and stay in touch on ordinary days. Ecclesiastes 4:10 says that if one falls, the other lifts him up.

### What if I fail again after telling someone?

Tell them again. The aim is restoration, and the text pictures a friend who lifts you up, not one who walks away.
