The Bible does not use the word addiction, but it knows what it is like to be mastered by something you did not choose to serve. These verses speak to that experience with honesty and hope. They sit alongside medical and professional help, which are good gifts, and they do not replace it. They come from the World English Bible. Pray the short prayer at the end.

**John 8:36 says who makes freedom real.** Jesus speaks to people who believed in him: if therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. The one who speaks is the Son, and the promise is that his freedom is real, not a feeling. (John 8:36)

## The Bible knows what being mastered is like

Jesus says in John 8 that everyone who commits sin is a bondservant of sin. Peter writes in his second letter, about false teachers, that by what a man is overcome, by this he is also enslaved. The line holds more widely. These are not insults. They describe what people already know from the inside.

Naming it honestly is where help starts. If something has more control over you than you want it to have, the Bible does not tell you to pretend otherwise.

> Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him, “If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” They answered him, “We are Abraham’s offspring, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How do you say, ‘You will be made free’?” Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is the bondservant of sin. A bondservant doesn’t live in the house forever. A son remains forever. If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
> (John 8:31-36)

> promising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption; for a man is brought into bondage by whoever overcomes him.
> (2 Peter 2:19)

## Freedom has a giver

Paul says in Galatians that it was for freedom that Christ set us free, so stand firm, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. In 2 Corinthians he says where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. Jesus read from Isaiah in the synagogue that God had sent him to proclaim release to the captives.

Freedom is described as something Jesus gives and the Spirit works. You are asked to stand, not to produce it from nothing.

> The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are crushed,
> (Luke 4:18)

> Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and don’t be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
> (Galatians 5:1)

> Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
> (2 Corinthians 3:17)

- Say it out loud: freedom is a gift, and I can ask for it today.

## You are not under its rule

Romans 6 tells believers not to let sin reign in their mortal body, to obey its lusts, or to present their members to sin as instruments of unrighteousness. Instead they should present themselves to God as alive from the dead. Verse 14 adds that sin will not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

In the same chapter Paul says you were once slaves of sin but became obedient from the heart, and having been set free from sin you became slaves of righteousness. It is a change of master, and you are asked to act on it.

> Therefore don’t let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. Also, do not present your members to sin as instruments of unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
> (Romans 6:12-13)

> Don’t you know that when you present yourselves as servants and obey someone, you are the servants of whomever you obey, whether of sin to death, or of obedience to righteousness? But thanks be to God that, whereas you were bondservants of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were delivered. Being made free from sin, you became bondservants of righteousness.
> (Romans 6:16-18)

## Freedom, not a new chain

Paul says in 1 Corinthians 6 that all things are lawful for him, but not all things are profitable, and that he will not be brought under the power of anything. In Galatians 5 he says that you were called to freedom, only do not use your freedom as an occasion for the flesh, but serve one another through love.

These verses give you a test: does this thing leave me freer or more bound? The goal is a life where nothing has more power over you than it should.

> “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are expedient. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be brought under the power of anything.
> (1 Corinthians 6:12)

> For you, brothers, were called for freedom. Only don’t use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love be servants to one another.
> (Galatians 5:13)

- Ask of any habit: does this make me freer or more bound?

## A God who lifts you out

Psalm 107 speaks of people who sat in darkness and gloom, prisoners in misery and chains, and that they cried to the LORD in their trouble and he saved them out of their distress. He brought them out of darkness and broke their chains apart.

The people in the psalm cried out, and God answered. Asking for help can include asking other people, and professionals too.

> Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and broke away their chains.
> (Psalm 107:13-14)

- Prayer does not replace treatment. If this has a hold on you, talk to a doctor or a counselor as well as to God and a friend. Counseling and medical help are good gifts.
- If despair or thoughts of hurting yourself come with it, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number, and tell someone near you tonight.

## A prayer to say with these verses

Lord, you are the one who sets people free. I am tired of being ruled by this. Break what binds me, lead me out of the dark, and send people to help me. Keep me standing in the freedom you give. Amen.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does the Bible talk about addiction?

The word is not used, but passages like John 8:34 and 2 Peter 2:19 describe being mastered by something, and others describe being set free.

### Can prayer alone free me?

Prayer matters, and it does not replace treatment. The Bible describes God as the one who frees (John 8:36) and also describes people helping each other (Galatians 6:2). Counseling and medical care are good gifts, and many people find they are part of how God helps.

### Why do I keep falling back?

Paul describes a struggle in Romans 7, and then says in Romans 8 that there is no condemnation for those in Christ. Keep coming back and keep getting help.

### What if I feel hopeless about this?

Tell someone today. In the United States, call or text 988; elsewhere, use your local emergency number. Psalm 107:13 says people in distress cried to the LORD and he saved them out of their distresses, and he often uses other people to reach you.

### Is it a sin to need help?

No. Psalm 107:13 shows people in chains crying out, and Galatians 6:2 tells believers to carry one another's burdens.
