Guilt can be accurate. If you did something wrong, a pang is the sign that your conscience works. The passages here help you tell that useful kind from the kind that only drags you down, and they show what to do with it. They come from the World English Bible. Pray the short prayer at the end.

**Romans 8:1 settles the question guilt keeps asking.** There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. You can still feel sorry and still need to change something, but the court case is closed. Guilt is meant to send you to God, not away from him. (Romans 8:1)

## What guilt is for

Paul distinguishes two kinds of sorrow in 2 Corinthians 7. Godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation and leaves no regret. The sorrow of the world produces death. The first moves you toward change and toward God. The second circles and wears you out.

David describes what unconfessed guilt feels like in Psalm 32: when he kept silent his bones wasted away. Then he acknowledged his sin, did not hide it, and God forgave. The relief in the psalm comes at the moment of saying it plainly.

> For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, which brings no regret. But the sorrow of the world produces death. For behold, this same thing, that you were grieved in a godly way, what earnest care it worked in you. Yes, what defense, indignation, fear, longing, zeal, and vindication! In everything you demonstrated yourselves to be pure in the matter.
> (2 Corinthians 7:10-11)

> By David. A contemplative psalm. Blessed is he whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man to whom the LORD doesn’t impute iniquity, in whose spirit there is no deceit. When I kept silence, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me. My strength was sapped in the heat of summer. Selah. I acknowledged my sin to you. I didn’t hide my iniquity. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the LORD, and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah.
> (Psalm 32:1-5)

## Say it plainly

Proverbs 28:13 says that whoever conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. It names two actions, not one: confessing and leaving. The mercy belongs to the person who does both.

First John 1 begins with honesty about the whole human condition. If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves, but if we confess, he is faithful and righteous to forgive and to cleanse. Notice the word faithful. He is not being generous against his nature; he is keeping his word.

Psalm 51 is the best script for it. David asks for mercy, owns his sin, says that it was against God above all, and asks for a clean heart. He does not make excuses and he does not despair.

> He who conceals his sins doesn’t prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.
> (Proverbs 28:13)

> If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
> (1 John 1:8-9)

> For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David, when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy on me, God, according to your loving kindness. According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity. Cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions. My sin is constantly before me. Against you, and you only, I have sinned, and done that which is evil in your sight, so you may be proved right when you speak, and justified when you judge. Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me. Don’t throw me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation. Uphold me with a willing spirit.
> (Psalm 51:1-4, 10-12)

- Write the sentence: I did this, it was wrong, I am sorry.
- Say it to God once, then tell one trusted person.

## Carrying it, and being cleansed

Psalm 38 puts the weight of guilt into words: my iniquities have gone over my head, as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. Then David says plainly, I will declare my iniquity, I will be sorry for my sin. Naming it is how the burden starts to move.

Hebrews 10 speaks of a conscience that has been sprinkled clean. Because of Jesus, the writer says, we can draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with hearts cleansed from an evil conscience. The guilty conscience is not told to stay away. It is invited in.

> For my iniquities have gone over my head. As a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me. My wounds are loathsome and corrupt because of my foolishness. I am in pain and bowed down greatly. I go mourning all day long. For I will declare my iniquity. I will be sorry for my sin.
> (Psalm 38:4-6, 18)

> Having therefore, brothers, boldness to enter into the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by the way which he dedicated for us, a new and living way, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh, and having a great priest over God’s house, let’s draw near with a true heart in fullness of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and having our body washed with pure water,
> (Hebrews 10:19-22)

## No condemnation, then the next step

In John 8, a woman caught in sin is brought to Jesus. Her accusers leave one by one and Jesus asks where they are. Neither do I condemn you, he says, and then he adds go your way and from now on sin no more. Forgiveness comes first and the direction comes second, and the direction is given by someone who just protected her.

Romans 8:1 is what you can say to yourself when the accusation returns. It is not that your sin did not matter. It is that it has been dealt with, so the next question is practical: what will you do differently at the hour it happens?

> There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made me free from the law of sin and of death.
> (Romans 8:1-2)

> Jesus, standing up, saw her and said, “Woman, where are your accusers? Did no one condemn you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, sin no more.”
> (John 8:10-11)

- Change one thing about the moment that led there.
- If the guilt returns after you have confessed, answer it with Romans 8:1, not with another confession.

## A prayer to say with these verses

Lord, I am sorry. I did what I did and I do not want to hide it. Forgive me, cleanse me, and give me a clean heart. Quiet the voice that says it is hopeless. Show me the one step to take tonight, and let me take it as someone you do not condemn. Amen.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is guilt from God?

A conscience that tells you something is wrong can be, and 2 Corinthians 7:10 calls that godly sorrow. It leads to repentance. Endless self-accusation after you have confessed is not what God asks for (Romans 8:1).

### How do I confess properly?

Plainly and without excuses, as in Psalm 51:1-4. First John 1:9 promises that confession meets forgiveness and cleansing.

### Why do I still feel guilty after confessing?

Feelings often lag behind facts. Hebrews 10:22 speaks of hearts cleansed from an evil conscience, so you can come to God in full assurance. Say that back to yourself, and tell a trusted person if the feeling will not move.

### Should I tell anyone?

Proverbs 28:13 honors the person who confesses and renounces. Telling a wise friend or pastor is one way to stop concealing. James 5:16 also speaks of confessing to one another.

### What does Jesus say to someone who has fallen?

To the woman in John 8:11 he said that he did not condemn her and that she should go and sin no more. Grace first, then a new direction.
