Loneliness is not boredom. Boredom wants something to do; loneliness wants someone. Many people find the pull toward lust is strongest in the hours when they feel unseen. These passages from the World English Bible speak to that ache directly. Read them slowly, then pray the short prayer at the end.

**Deuteronomy 31:8 is a promise made to a man about to lead without his teacher.** The LORD himself goes before you, he will be with you, and he will not fail or forsake you. Moses says it to Joshua, who is about to lead Israel into an unknown land without him, so it was spoken for exactly the moment when the familiar company is gone. (Deuteronomy 31:8)

## You are allowed to say it

The Bible does not ask the lonely to hide it. David prays in Psalm 25: turn to me and have mercy on me, for I am desolate and afflicted. The Hebrew word for desolate means alone and single. A whole psalm begins with that admission, and it is in Scripture so you can use it.

Psalm 27 goes one step further. Even if my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will take me up. It does not say the pain is small. It says there is a place to be received even when the people who should have are not there.

> Turn to me, and have mercy on me, for I am desolate and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged. Oh bring me out of my distresses. Consider my affliction and my travail. Forgive all my sins.
> (Psalm 25:16-18)

> When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.
> (Psalm 27:10)

## A presence that stays

Moses tells Israel and then Joshua that the LORD goes with them and will not fail them or forsake them. Hebrews quotes the same promise: I will in no way leave you. The context there is contentment, and the author says that because God stays, you can say the Lord is my helper, I will not fear.

Jesus ends the Gospel of Matthew with a promise to the disciples he is sending out: I am with you always, to the end of the age. The presence is not limited to feelings. It is stated as a fact, and you are allowed to hold to it when it does not feel true.

> Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them, for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.” Moses called to Joshua, and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land which the LORD has sworn to their fathers to give them; and you shall cause them to inherit it. The LORD himself is who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be discouraged.
> (Deuteronomy 31:6-8)

> Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.” So that with good courage we say, “The Lord is my helper. I will not fear. What can man do to me?”
> (Hebrews 13:5-6)

> Jesus came to them and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
> (Matthew 28:18-20)

## The Spirit and the family

On the night before he died, Jesus tells his friends that he will ask the Father to give them another Counselor, the Spirit of truth, who lives with them and will be in them. I will not leave you orphans, he says. For anyone who has felt like an orphan, that sentence is for you.

Psalm 68 says God is a father to the fatherless and that God sets the lonely in families. Families are made of real people, so God's answer to loneliness includes people nearby: a church, a small group, a table with others at it.

> I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever: the Spirit of truth, whom the world can’t receive, for it doesn’t see him and doesn’t know him. You know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you.
> (John 14:16-18)

> A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows, is God in his holy habitation. God sets the lonely in families. He brings out the prisoners with singing, but the rebellious dwell in a sun-scorched land.
> (Psalm 68:5-6)

## Company you can reach for

Ecclesiastes is blunt about the risk of being alone when you fall: woe to him who is alone when he falls and has no one to lift him up. Two are better than one, and a cord of three strands is not quickly broken. For someone fighting lust in secret, this is practical advice, not a pious one.

Hebrews 10 urges believers to draw near to God and to keep meeting, spurring one another on. Galatians 6 says to bear one another's burdens. You do not have to tell everyone. You need one person who knows.

> Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have warmth; but how can one keep warm alone? If a man prevails against one who is alone, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
> (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12)

> let’s draw near with a true heart in fullness of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and having our body washed with pure water, let’s hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering; for he who promised is faithful. Let’s consider how to provoke one another to love and good works, not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
> (Hebrews 10:22-25)

> Brothers, even if a man is caught in some fault, you who are spiritual must restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, looking to yourself so that you also aren’t tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
> (Galatians 6:1-2)

## A prayer to say with these verses

Lord, I feel alone tonight. Turn to me and have mercy. Remind me that you go before me and will not leave me. Send me someone to talk to, and make me brave enough to reach out. Keep me from running to places that only make the loneliness deeper. Amen.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does the Bible say about loneliness?

It names it honestly (Psalm 25:16) and answers with God's presence (Deuteronomy 31:8, Matthew 28:20), the Spirit who lives in believers (John 14:17-18) and a family God sets the lonely in (Psalm 68:6).

### Is loneliness a sin?

No. David prays about being desolate in Psalm 25, and the Psalms treat the feeling as something to bring to God. What you do with it matters, which is why Ecclesiastes 4:10 stresses having someone to lift you up.

### Why does loneliness make temptation worse?

The Bible does not say it directly, but Ecclesiastes 4:10 says someone alone when he falls has no one to help him. Loneliness and temptation often arrive together, so plan company for the hours you are most alone.

### How is loneliness different from boredom?

Boredom is a lack of activity; loneliness is a lack of connection. The remedies differ. For loneliness, the passages above point to God's presence and to people (Psalm 68:6, Hebrews 10:24-25).

### What if loneliness feels hopeless?

Tell someone today. If you are in danger or thinking about hurting yourself, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number. Psalm 34:18 says the LORD is near to the broken-hearted.
