These passages from the World English Bible speak plainly about lust: where it starts, why it matters, how to run from it, and what God says to someone who fell last night. Read them slowly, then pray the short prayer at the end.

**2 Timothy 2:22 is the clearest short verse to hold on to.** It gives a direction instead of a feeling: run from the desire, run toward righteousness, faith, love and peace, and do it together with other believers. When the pull is loud, a verse that tells you what to do next helps more than one that only tells you what is wrong. (2 Timothy 2:22)

## Where lust starts

Jesus moves the question from the act to the look. In the Sermon on the Mount he says that the problem begins in the heart, before anything happens with the body. That is hard to hear, and it is also hopeful: if it starts with what you look at and dwell on, it can be met there too.

James describes the same process step by step. Desire draws a person away, then conceives, then gives birth to sin. The earlier you interrupt the chain, the less it costs.

> You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery;’ but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.
> (Matthew 5:27-28)

> But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust and enticed. Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin. The sin, when it is full grown, produces death.
> (James 1:14-15)

## Why the body matters to God

Paul does not treat sexual sin as a private matter between a person and their screen. He says the body is a temple of the Holy Spirit and that it was bought at a price. The command that follows is short: flee.

In 1 Thessalonians he names holiness as God's will and contrasts self-control with the passion of lust. The point is not shame. It is that your body and your desires belong to someone who loves you.

> Flee sexual immorality! “Every sin that a man does is outside the body,” but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
> (1 Corinthians 6:18-20)

> For this is the will of God: your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality, that each one of you know how to control his own body in sanctification and honor, not in the passion of lust, even as the Gentiles who don’t know God,
> (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5)

## How to fight it in practice

The Bible's answer is rarely to grit your teeth alone. Job made a covenant with his eyes. Paul tells Timothy to flee and to pursue good things with others who call on the Lord. Romans tells us to make no provision for the flesh: decide in advance, while you are calm, what you will not keep within reach.

Galatians gives the deeper answer. Walking by the Spirit is not only resisting. It is filling the space with something better.

> I made a covenant with my eyes; how then should I look lustfully at a young woman?
> (Job 31:1)

> Flee from youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
> (2 Timothy 2:22)

> But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, for its lusts.
> (Romans 13:14)

> But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh.
> (Galatians 5:16)

- Name the moments that come before a fall: late at night, alone, tired, bored.
- Remove the easy way in before that moment comes: the app, the search, the phone in bed.
- Have one person you can text in the moment, and one verse you know by heart.

## A way out is promised

1 Corinthians 10:13 is the verse many people reach for in the moment. It does not say temptation will be small. It says it is common, that God is faithful, and that he provides a way of escape. Often the way of escape is very ordinary: stand up, leave the room, put the phone in another place.

> No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
> (1 Corinthians 10:13)

> How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. With my whole heart I have sought you. Don’t let me wander from your commandments. I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
> (Psalm 119:9-11)

## If you fell last night

Shame says you are what you did. The gospel says something else. John promises that confession meets forgiveness and cleansing, and Paul says there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Confess plainly, refuse the voice that says it is over, and look at what led you there so the next time has a different path.

> If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
> (1 John 1:9)

> There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
> (Romans 8:1)

## A prayer to say with these verses

Lord Jesus, you see where my eyes go and what my heart wants. I do not want this desire to rule me. Make me quick to run, and give me something better to run toward. Guard my eyes tonight. If I fall, let me come back to you at once, not hide. Thank you that there is no condemnation for those who are in you. Amen.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does the Bible say about lust?

Jesus says that looking at someone to lust after them is already adultery in the heart (Matthew 5:28). Paul calls believers to flee sexual immorality and to control their bodies in holiness, not in the passion of lust (1 Corinthians 6:18, 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5). The Bible treats lust seriously and also offers forgiveness and a way out.

### Is it a sin to be tempted by lust?

No. Jesus was tempted in every way and did not sin (Hebrews 4:15). Temptation is the pull; sin is giving in to it. James describes desire conceiving and then giving birth to sin, which is why it helps to act early.

### What is the best Bible verse to memorize for lust?

Short verses you can recall in the moment work best: 2 Timothy 2:22 (flee and pursue), 1 Corinthians 10:13 (a way of escape) and Job 31:1 (a covenant with the eyes).

### Which Bible translation is quoted here?

The World English Bible (WEB), a modern English translation in the public domain. It is the same text the Renounce app reads offline.

### What should I do right after a relapse?

Confess it plainly to God (1 John 1:9), reject condemnation (Romans 8:1), tell someone you trust, and change one thing about the moment that led there, such as where your phone sleeps.
