Some struggles feel bigger than willpower. The Bible agrees that there is more going on than you can see, and it also says you are not left without protection. These verses are about the struggle, the armor, and the way Jesus answered. They come from the World English Bible. Pray the short prayer at the end.

**Ephesians 6:10-11 tells you where your strength comes from and what to put on.** Paul writes to the believers at Ephesus: be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might, and put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. The strength is the Lord's, not yours, and the armor is given to you to put on. (Ephesians 6:10-11)

## Strength that is not your own

Paul begins his instruction with a source: be strong in the Lord. Then he names what you are up against. Our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers and powers and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. That is a sober description, and it should make you humble.

The next lines list the armor: truth, righteousness, the readiness of peace, faith, salvation and the word of God, with prayer at all times. Nothing on the list is a technique. All of it is received.

> Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
> (Ephesians 6:10-13)

> Stand therefore, having the utility belt of truth buckled around your waist, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having fitted your feet with the preparation of the Good News of peace, above all, taking up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; with all prayer and requests, praying at all times in the Spirit, and being watchful to this end in all perseverance and requests for all the saints.
> (Ephesians 6:14-18)

## How Jesus answered

Matthew 4 tells how Jesus was tempted in the wilderness after fasting. When the tempter says to turn stones into bread, Jesus answers with Scripture: it is written that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. He does not argue or bargain.

A short verse, said with trust, was enough. This is a good pattern for a hard moment: choose a verse in advance and say it aloud.

> The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of God’s mouth.’”
> (Matthew 4:3-4)

## Submit, resist, stand firm

James 4:7 gives the order of things: submit yourselves to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Submitting comes first. Peter says that your adversary the devil walks around like a roaring lion, and tells his readers to be sober, to watch, and to resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that others in the family of believers are going through the same sufferings.

Two things stand out. The passage asks for alertness, not panic. And it reminds you that you are not the only one.

> Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
> (James 4:7)

> Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Withstand him steadfast in your faith, knowing that your brothers who are in the world are undergoing the same sufferings.
> (1 Peter 5:8-9)

## You are not on the losing side

John tells his readers that he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. Colossians 2 says that Christ disarmed the rulers and authorities and made a show of them, triumphing over them in the cross. Romans 16 says that the God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.

These verses do not say that it will be easy. They say that the outcome is settled and that you fight from a position of safety.

None of this asks you to be dramatic. Most of the fight is ordinary: praying early, knowing your weak places, staying near other believers, and having a verse ready. The Bible's picture of the struggle is serious, and its advice is calm and practical, so you can follow it on a quiet Tuesday as well as in a crisis.

> You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world.
> (1 John 4:4)

> Having stripped the principalities and the powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
> (Colossians 2:15)

> And the God of peace will quickly crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
> (Romans 16:20)

## Be aware, not afraid

Paul says in 2 Corinthians 2 that we should not be outwitted by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes. In 2 Kings 6 a servant is terrified by the army around the city, and Elisha prays that his eyes be opened. He sees that those with them are more than those against them.

Hebrews 2 adds that Jesus shared in our flesh so that through death he might deliver those who all their lives were in bondage through fear. Awareness is useful. Fear is not required. Paul also ends his armor passage by asking for prayer for all the saints, so the fight is not meant to be fought alone. If it feels beyond what you can carry, tell a pastor or a trusted friend.

> that no advantage may be gained over us by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes.
> (2 Corinthians 2:11)

> He answered, “Don’t be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” Elisha prayed, and said, “LORD, please open his eyes, that he may see.” the LORD opened the young man’s eyes, and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire around Elisha.
> (2 Kings 6:16-17)

> Since then the children have shared in flesh and blood, he also himself in the same way partook of the same, that through death he might bring to nothing him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and might deliver all of them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
> (Hebrews 2:14-15)

## A prayer to say with these verses

Lord, you are stronger than what I face. Teach me to put on what you give, to say your word, and to stand. Open my eyes to see that you are with me. Keep me alert and unafraid. In Jesus' name, amen.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is spiritual warfare?

Ephesians 6:12 describes a struggle not only with people but with spiritual forces of evil. The Bible's answer is to stand in the Lord's strength, with the armor he provides.

### Is every temptation spiritual warfare?

The Bible also speaks of our own desires (James 1:14). Both can be present. The response is the same: pray, resist and stay near other believers.

### What did Jesus do when he was tempted?

He answered with Scripture and trusted the Father (Matthew 4:4). A short verse said aloud is a good model.

### What is the armor of God?

Ephesians 6:14-18 lists truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, the word of God and prayer. These are described as things God gives you.

### Will resisting really work?

James 4:7 says that if you submit to God and resist the devil, he will flee from you. Alongside it, Romans 16:20 says God will crush Satan under your feet.
