# When to overseed your lawn, by grass type > The best time to overseed a lawn depends on the grass: late summer to early fall for cool-season lawns, late spring to early summer for warm-season ones. Publisher: Lucernel. ## Short answer For cool-season lawns (tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, ryegrass, fine fescue), overseed in late summer or early fall, when the soil is about 50 to 65°F and the seedlings have weeks of mild weather to root before frost. Warm soil, cooler nights, fall rain and fewer weeds give new grass the best start. Timing is about the frost that follows. Penn State Extension notes that late summer is usually the best time to seed and that seeding after mid-October is risky in most of Pennsylvania, because the seedlings may not establish before winter. Farther south the window runs later, farther north it closes earlier. ## Warm-season lawns: spring to early summer Bermuda grass, zoysia, centipede and St. Augustine grow in summer and go dormant after the first heavy frost. NC State Extension gives about April to July 1 as the time to establish them in North Carolina, and notes that sod does not root until the soil stays above 55°F for several weeks. Some owners overseed a dormant Bermuda lawn with annual ryegrass for winter color. It is a winter cover, not a repair, and NC State does not recommend it for other warm-season grasses. ## How to overseed - Mow a little shorter than usual and rake out dead grass so the seed reaches soil. - Aerate or dethatch first if the soil is compacted or covered in thatch. - Spread seed at the rate on the bag, in two passes at right angles for even cover. - Keep the top of the soil moist with light, frequent watering until the seedlings are established. - Check the label of any preemergent weed killer before seeding: most also stop grass seed from growing. ## After seeding Wait until the new grass is tall enough to cut before the first mowing, and keep traffic off the seeded areas.
