Bible verses for anxiety, especially late at night
Anxious nights and compulsive habits often share a bed. When the mind will not settle, the phone is close and relief is a tap away. These passages from the World English Bible offer a different kind of relief: handing the worry to someone who can carry it. Read them slowly, then pray the short prayer at the end.
Short answer
Philippians 4:6-7 tells you what to do with the worry, not only that you should stop.
Be anxious for nothing, pray about everything, with thanksgiving, and the peace of God will guard your hearts and thoughts. The verse gives a route for the worry to travel: out of your head and into a request to God. The peace is described as something that stands guard.
Philippians 4:6-7
Hand it over, out loud
Paul writes Philippians 4 from prison. His advice is not to feel differently by force but to turn each worry into a request, with thanks. Peter says the same thing in other words: cast all your worries on him, because he cares for you. The reason is not that your worries are small. It is that he cares.
Psalm 55:22 uses a heavier word. Cast your burden on the LORD and he will sustain you. A burden is something you carry, and the verse says you can put it down onto someone else's shoulders.
In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report: if there is any virtue and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Do the things which you learned, received, heard, and saw in me, and the God of peace will be with you.
Philippians 4:6-9
Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time, casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.
1 Peter 5:6-7
Cast your burden on the LORD and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.
Psalm 55:22
- Say the worry plainly to God, one sentence at a time.
- Add one thing you are thankful for before you go on.
One day at a time
Jesus is gentle in the Sermon on the Mount. Look at the birds, he says, and the flowers. Your heavenly Father feeds and clothes them, and you are worth more. Worry cannot add a moment to a life. He ends with a practical rule: do not be anxious about tomorrow, because tomorrow will have its own worries, and each day has enough trouble of its own.
He does not tell his hearers to stop caring about food or clothes. He tells them to seek God's kingdom first and trust that the Father knows what they need. The cure for worry here is a reordered list, with God first.
Therefore I tell you, don’t be anxious for your life: what you will eat, or what you will drink; nor yet for your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothing? See the birds of the sky, that they don’t sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns. Your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you of much more value than they? “Which of you by being anxious, can add one moment to his lifespan? Why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They don’t toil, neither do they spin, yet I tell you that even Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today exists and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, won’t he much more clothe you, you of little faith? “Therefore don’t be anxious, saying, ‘What will we eat?’, ‘What will we drink?’ or, ‘With what will we be clothed?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.
Matthew 6:25-34
When your mind will not slow down
The psalmist in Psalm 94 describes a mind with many anxious thoughts. When I said my foot is slipping, your loving kindness held me up. And in the multitude of thoughts, your comforts delight my soul. He does not remove the thoughts. He finds comfort in the middle of them.
Isaiah 41:10 is a short promise to hold onto: do not be afraid, I am with you, I will strengthen and help and uphold you. Psalm 62 adds a practical instruction for the soul: wait in silence for God alone, trust him at all times, pour out your heart before him.
When I said, “My foot is slipping!” Your loving kindness, LORD, held me up. In the multitude of my thoughts within me, your comforts delight my soul.
Psalm 94:18-19
Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.
Isaiah 41:10
My soul, wait in silence for God alone, for my expectation is from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress. I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor is with God. The rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. Trust in him at all times, you people. Pour out your heart before him. God is a refuge for us. Selah.
Psalm 62:5-8
Rest for the tired
Jesus invites everyone who labors and is heavily burdened to come to him for rest, and says his yoke is easy and his burden light. The invitation is addressed to the tired, which includes people whose tiredness is partly caused by what they carry in their heads.
Psalm 143 is a morning prayer. Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning, for I trust in you, and show me the way I should walk. A prayer at the start of the day is a good place to put the day's worries before they build. If anxiety is constant or affects your sleep and work, it is wise to talk to a doctor or counselor as well as praying.
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30
Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning, for I trust in you. Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to you.
Psalm 143:8
A prayer to say with these verses
Father, my mind is loud and I am tired. I give you what I am afraid of, one thing at a time. Guard my heart and my thoughts with your peace. Keep me from reaching for quick relief that only makes tomorrow heavier. Hold me tonight, and let me rest. Amen.
Frequently asked questions
What does the Bible say about anxiety?
Philippians 4:6 says to be anxious for nothing and to bring everything to God with thanksgiving. First Peter 5:7 says to cast all your worries on him because he cares for you.
Does Jesus say anxiety is a sin?
In Matthew 6:25-34 he tells people not to be anxious and gives reasons: the Father feeds the birds and knows your needs. It reads as an invitation to trust, said with tenderness, and not as an accusation.
What verse helps with a racing mind?
Psalm 94:19 (in the multitude of my thoughts your comforts delight my soul), Isaiah 41:10 and Psalm 62:5-8 are good ones to read slowly.
Can anxiety trigger temptation?
Many people find it does, because relief is close at hand. Matthew 11:28 offers a different rest. Name the worry, pray it, and move your phone out of reach before you try to sleep.
Should I see a doctor as well?
Yes, if anxiety is constant or heavy. Praying and seeking help are not in competition. If you are thinking about hurting yourself, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number.
