Bible verses for resisting temptation when you are worn out
The passages below are about what to do with your hands and your attention in the hour when you are tired and the thing you want is close. Being tempted is one subject; deciding what to do next is another, and these verses speak to the second. They come from the World English Bible. Pray the short prayer at the end.
Short answer
James 4:7-8 gives the clearest order of steps.
Submit to God, resist, and draw near. The order matters: the resisting comes after the submitting, and it ends with God drawing near to you. It is a picture of leaning on someone, not of standing alone.
James 4:7-8
Start by submitting, then resist
James puts the sequence in two sentences. Be subject to God, resist the devil and he will flee, draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Most people try the second step first and run out of strength. The verse starts with whose side you are on, and it ends with closeness, not with a victory lap.
He also tells the double-minded to purify their hearts. That is an honest word for anyone who wants to win and keep a small door open. Hebrews adds a reason to come close without fear: Jesus was tempted in every way we are, and he is a high priest who understands. Draw near with boldness, the writer says, to find mercy and help in time of need.
Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners. Purify your hearts, you double-minded.
James 4:7-8
Having then a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let’s hold tightly to our confession. For we don’t have a high priest who can’t be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin. Let’s therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace for help in time of need.
Hebrews 4:14-16
- Say it out loud: I am on God's side tonight.
- Pick one action that follows, such as leaving the room.
Watch and pray when you are tired
Jesus says this to disciples who are about to fall asleep at the worst possible time. Watch and pray so that you do not enter temptation, because the spirit is willing and the flesh is weak. He does not scold them for having weak flesh. He tells them what to do about it.
Peter, who heard it, later writes that we should be sober and watchful, because the adversary prowls looking for someone to devour. He adds a line that is easy to miss: other believers around the world are going through the same sufferings. Paul's short version is just as useful on a bad night: watch, stand firm, be courageous, be strong.
Watch and pray, that you don’t enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Matthew 26:41
Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Withstand him steadfast in your faith, knowing that your brothers who are in the world are undergoing the same sufferings.
1 Peter 5:8-9
Watch! Stand firm in the faith! Be courageous! Be strong!
1 Corinthians 16:13
The armor is for standing
Ephesians 6 says the struggle is not only against flesh and blood, and that God gives armor so that you can stand. The pieces are truth, righteousness, the good news of peace, faith, salvation and the word of God, and the whole passage is wrapped in prayer at all times. Notice the verb in verse 13: stand. The goal of the armor is to hold the ground, not to charge.
Practically, this is slow work done before the moment comes. Truth is knowing the verse. Faith is trusting that you are loved after a bad day. The word of God is the sentence you can say when everything else is noise.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having the utility belt of truth buckled around your waist, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having fitted your feet with the preparation of the Good News of peace, above all, taking up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; with all prayer and requests, praying at all times in the Spirit, and being watchful to this end in all perseverance and requests for all the saints.
Ephesians 6:10-18
A way out is built into the situation
The promise in 1 Corinthians 10:13 has three parts. Your temptation is common, God is faithful, and he will provide the way of escape along with it. Together they mean that when it feels like there is no way out, the feeling is not the whole truth. Look for the plain exit near you.
Paul's advice to the Thessalonians is brief: the Lord is faithful, and he will establish you and guard you from the evil one. The guarding is not all on you. What you can do is take away what makes the night harder, because there is less to resist when the easy way in is gone.
No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
1 Corinthians 10:13
But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one.
2 Thessalonians 3:3
- Remove one supply tonight: an account, a bookmark, a hiding place on your phone.
- Know your exit before you need it.
A prayer to say with these verses
Father, I am weak and I know it. I submit this night to you. Teach me to watch, to pray and to stand. Make the way out plain to me and give me the will to take it. Thank you that you draw near when I draw near to you. Amen.
Frequently asked questions
What is the first thing to do when I am tempted?
James 4:7 starts with being subject to God. Turn toward him first, even in a one-line prayer, and then take a concrete step away from the temptation.
What does watch and pray mean?
Jesus says it in Matthew 26:41 to tired disciples: stay alert, and talk to God, because the flesh is weak. It is a daily habit, especially for the hours when you are most worn down.
Is the armor of God about fighting harder?
Ephesians 6:11-14 uses the word stand. The armor is for holding your ground, and it is surrounded by prayer in verse 18.
Does God always give a way of escape?
First Corinthians 10:13 says so: God is faithful and will provide the way of escape so you can endure. It is often an ordinary step, taken early.
Did Jesus face temptation too?
Yes. Hebrews 4:15 says he was tempted in every way we are, yet without sin, and Hebrews 2:18 says that because of it he is able to help those who are tempted.
