Bible verses for sexual temptation, and how to run
Sexual temptation is not rare, and it is not new. These passages from the World English Bible show people facing it and being told what to do: leave, keep your distance, run toward something better, and trust that a way out exists. Read them slowly, then pray the short prayer at the end.
Short answer
1 Corinthians 6:18 is the verse to keep closest.
Its first two words are an instruction, not an analysis: flee. Paul does not ask you to win an argument with the desire. He asks you to leave, and the verses around it explain why your body is worth that effort.
1 Corinthians 6:18
Flee: the shape of the command
Paul writes to a church in a city full of easy sexual options, and his answer is short. Flee. The reason he gives is that the body is not a side issue. It belongs to the Lord, it is a temple of the Holy Spirit, and it was bought at a price. The command is not a threat. It rests on how much you are worth to the one who paid.
Joseph is the Old Testament picture of the same word. When his master's wife pressed him, he first gave a reason he could say out loud: he would be wronging a man who trusted him and sinning against God. She kept asking, day after day, and he kept refusing. Then came the moment when no one else was in the house, and he did not stay to test his strength. He left, even though it cost him his coat.
Flee sexual immorality! “Every sin that a man does is outside the body,” but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
1 Corinthians 6:18-20
After these things, his master’s wife set her eyes on Joseph; and she said, “Lie with me.” But he refused, and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, my master doesn’t know what is with me in the house, and he has put all that he has into my hand. No one is greater in this house than I am, and he has not kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” As she spoke to Joseph day by day, he didn’t listen to her, to lie by her, or to be with her. About this time, he went into the house to do his work, and there were none of the men of the house inside. She caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me!” He left his garment in her hand, and ran outside.
Genesis 39:7-12
Distance does what willpower cannot
Proverbs 5 is a father's advice to his son, and its most practical line is about location: remove your way far from her and do not come near the door. The passage admits that the temptation tastes sweet at first. It is honest about the ending too, which is bitter. The wise move is to decide where you will not walk before the sweetness is in front of you.
Proverbs 6 asks two plain questions about fire in the lap and hot coals under the feet. The answer to both is obvious, and that is the point. Some risks are not managed by being careful inside them. They are managed by staying out.
My son, pay attention to my wisdom. Turn your ear to my understanding, that you may maintain discretion, that your lips may preserve knowledge. For the lips of an adulteress drip honey. Her mouth is smoother than oil, but in the end she is as bitter as wormwood, and as sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death. Her steps lead straight to Sheol. She gives no thought to the way of life. Her ways are crooked, and she doesn’t know it. Now therefore, my sons, listen to me. Don’t depart from the words of my mouth. Remove your way far from her. Don’t come near the door of her house,
Proverbs 5:1-8
Don’t lust after her beauty in your heart, neither let her captivate you with her eyelids. For a prostitute reduces you to a piece of bread. The adulteress hunts for your precious life. Can a man scoop fire into his lap, and his clothes not be burned? Or can one walk on hot coals, and his feet not be scorched?
Proverbs 6:25-28
- Decide in daylight which places, apps and hours you will not enter.
- Treat the door as the line, not the room.
- Tell one person what your door is.
Run toward something, not only away
Timothy is told to flee, and in the same breath to pursue: righteousness, faith, love and peace, together with people who call on the Lord from a pure heart. Fleeing alone leaves you standing in an empty space. The verse gives you a direction and a company.
Paul's letter to the Thessalonians says this is God's will for them: holiness, a body controlled in honor, not driven by the passion of lust. It also says God called them to holiness, not to uncleanness. You were called to something, which is different from only being forbidden something.
Flee from youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
2 Timothy 2:22
For this is the will of God: your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality, that each one of you know how to control his own body in sanctification and honor, not in the passion of lust, even as the Gentiles who don’t know God, that no one should take advantage of and wrong a brother or sister in this matter; because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as also we forewarned you and testified. For God called us not for uncleanness, but in sanctification. Therefore he who rejects this doesn’t reject man, but God, who has also given his Holy Spirit to you.
1 Thessalonians 4:3-8
The way out, and the word in your heart
First Corinthians 10:13 is a promise that your situation is not unique and not beyond what you can bear, because God provides an escape with the temptation. The escape is often small: a closed laptop, a walk, a call. Look for it early, while it is still a small thing to take.
The psalmist asks how a young man can keep his way pure and answers that it is by living according to God's word. He has hidden it in his heart. A verse you already know is a tool you can use at 2 a.m. when you cannot look anything up. Romans 13:14 adds the practical side: put on Christ and make no provision for the flesh, meaning do not arrange your life so that the fall is easy.
No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
1 Corinthians 10:13
How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. With my whole heart I have sought you. Don’t let me wander from your commandments. I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119:9-11
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, for its lusts.
Romans 13:14
- Memorize one short verse for the worst hour of your day.
- Set up the escape in advance: where will you go, who will you text?
A prayer to say with these verses
Lord, you know what I am facing and how loud it can get. Give me the sense to leave early and the courage to leave quickly. Show me the way out you have already made. Draw my heart toward you, and give me friends who will run with me. When I am weak, hold me. Amen.
Frequently asked questions
What does the Bible say to do when you are sexually tempted?
Flee. Paul says it in 1 Corinthians 6:18, Timothy is told to flee and pursue in 2 Timothy 2:22, and Joseph left the room when he was pressed in Genesis 39. Proverbs 5:8 adds distance: do not come near the door.
Is being tempted the same as sinning?
No. First Corinthians 10:13 calls temptation common to people and promises a way of escape. James 1:14-15 describes the path from desire to sin, which is why it helps to act early, before desire is fed.
What can I learn from Joseph?
He gave a clear reason, that it would be a sin against God. He refused again every day, and when the moment came he ran (Genesis 39:9-12). He did not rely on being strong in the room.
Which verse should I memorize first?
Many people start with 1 Corinthians 6:18 (flee) or 1 Corinthians 10:13 (a way of escape). Both are short and tell you what to do next.
What if I have already fallen?
First John 1:9 says that confession meets forgiveness and cleansing. Confess it, then look at the moment that led there and change one thing about it.
