Short answer

NoFap is an online peer-support community, founded in 2011, where people try to stop using p*rn and, for a set time, masturbation, and count their days as a streak. Its own pages call it a recovery site that offers no treatment, and many claims around it are self-reported rather than proven by research. A Christian can keep the clear goal and drop the score.

Choose this if

Use NoFap’s vocabulary and community if peer support and a day counter help you hold a clear goal.

Choose the other option if

Renounce fits if you want the same goal with prayer, Scripture and a way to return after a fall that does not treat the streak as your worth.

What NoFap means

NoFap is a website and online community. Its About page says it has existed since 2011, describes itself as a peer-support site for people recovering from p*rn addiction and other compulsive sexual behavior, and states that it does not provide treatment, therapy or counseling. The name comes from a slang word for masturbation, which its glossary says imitates a sound.

The site also says it is not religiously affiliated, that it takes no stance on morality, and that it does not advocate long-term abstinence. Many users avoid masturbation for a set period, typically seven to ninety days, while others only aim to stop p*rn.

The vocabulary

The community has its own words. The NoFap glossary defines most of the ones you will meet first.

  • PMO: p*rn, masturbation and orgasm, treated as one habit.
  • Streak: the count of days in a row since your last reset.
  • Reset: failing a challenge, so the day counter returns to day one.
  • Relapse: returning to the habit after a period of improvement.
  • Flatline: a period of no libido that many users report, often in weeks two to six, which the glossary says is a phase that passes. That is a user report, not a measured finding.
  • Hard Mode: no sexual release of any kind, including with a partner.

Common rules and variants

There is no single rule set. The glossary describes a Normal and a Hard Mode, and edging is usually counted as a reset in both. Beyond that, people set their own terms: p*rn only, p*rn and masturbation, or a time-limited challenge of seven, thirty or ninety days.

Retention, a related idea, means going longer without sexual release to redirect energy to other things. NoFap’s glossary lists it as a separate practice from recovery. If you adopt a rule, write it down in your own words before you start, so you know what counts as a fall.

What research supports, and what is only claims

Research exists, but little of it tests NoFap itself. A 2019 paper in Archives of Sexual Behavior (Grubbs and colleagues) proposed that many people who feel addicted to p*rn are better understood as feeling a conflict between their beliefs and their behavior, which the authors call moral incongruence. The paper pairs that model with a systematic review and meta-analysis.

A 2021 study in the same journal analyzed posts on NoFap and similar forums. It was qualitative and drew on what members wrote, and it noted that commitment to abstinence, framed as recovery and relapse, was a major factor in maintaining distress. A 2024 review of online courses on ejaculation control found that none of the 10 instructors had medical or mental-health credentials, and that the courses’ health claims lacked scientific evidence.

So the safe reading is plain. Claims such as higher testosterone, more energy or a brain reboot come mostly from user reports and forum posts. They are self-report, not research, and a streak is not a treatment. If compulsive use is harming your work, health or relationships, a licensed counselor or doctor can help in a way a forum cannot.

A Christian reading: purpose, grace, not a score

A Christian can keep several things from this movement: a clear goal, a defined time, honest words for what you are doing, and company. Scripture supports repentance and returning. The World English Bible renders Proverbs 24:16 as “for a righteous man falls seven times and rises up again,” and 1 John 1:9 says “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

What to question is the number. A streak can turn into a score to defend, and a reset into proof that you are failing. Romans 8:1 says “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.” A day counter is a tool for attention, not a measure of standing before God. Faith leaders and counselors in your church are also part of the answer.

Frequently asked questions

What does PMO mean on NoFap?

PMO stands for p*rn, masturbation and orgasm. The community uses it to name the whole habit it is trying to stop.

Is NoFap real or a scam?

The community is real, and it says it offers peer support, not treatment. Many of its health claims are self-reported and not proven by research.

What are the rules of NoFap?

There is no single rule. Common versions avoid p*rn, or p*rn and masturbation, for a set period such as 7, 30 or 90 days, and Hard Mode also excludes any sexual release.

Is NoFap a Christian program?

No. Its About page says it is not religiously affiliated. Christians use its ideas, such as clear goals and streaks, alongside prayer and church.
