Bible verses about grace, a gift you cannot earn

Grace is the part of the message that sounds too good to be true when you are tired of failing. These verses explain what the Bible means by it: a gift that is given, not earned, and that does more than forgive. It also teaches. They come from the World English Bible. Pray the short prayer at the end.

Short answer

Ephesians 2:8-9 says in one sentence what grace is.

Paul writes to believers in Ephesus that by grace you have been saved through faith, and that this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works. Nothing on your record, good or bad, changes how a gift works.

Ephesians 2:8-9

A gift, not a wage

Paul begins in Ephesians 2 with where we were: dead in trespasses. Then he says but God, being rich in mercy, made us alive together with Christ. The whole passage turns on those two words. Salvation does not start with our effort. It starts with God moving first.

That is why Paul says there is no room to boast. A gift can be received and thanked for, and nothing more. If you have been trying to be good enough for God to take you back, this is the passage that tells you to stop paying and start receiving.

But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus; for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast.

Ephesians 2:4-9

for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God; being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

Romans 3:23-24

More grace than sin

John says we have all received from his fullness, grace upon grace. Romans 5 goes further and says that where sin abounded, grace abounded more. Paul is not saying sin is small. He is saying that nothing you have done is larger than what God has given.

This is the verse to remember when you are tempted to think your pattern is the exception. You may be the person who has failed the same way many times. Grace is described as abundant, not rationed.

From his fullness we all received grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses. Grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.

John 1:16-17

The law came in that the trespass might abound; but where sin abounded, grace abounded more exceedingly, that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 5:20-21

Grace does not excuse sin

Paul knows how people hear this and answers it in Romans 6. Should we continue in sin so that grace may abound? May it never be. Then he says that sin will not have dominion over you, because you are not under law but under grace.

Titus puts the same idea positively. The grace of God has appeared bringing salvation to all people, and it teaches us to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives. Grace is a teacher. It forgives, and it also changes what you want over time.

If you are reading this after another fall, the first move is not to promise harder effort. It is to receive again what has already been given. Tell God what happened, thank him that his favor does not depend on a clean record, and then take the next small step with him rather than away from him.

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? May it never be! We who died to sin, how could we live in it any longer?

Romans 6:1-2

For sin will not have dominion over you, for you are not under law, but under grace. What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be!

Romans 6:14-15

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we would live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present age;

Titus 2:11-12
  • Receive the forgiveness first. The change grows out of it.

Grace for the work and the waiting

Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15 that by the grace of God he is what he is. He says he worked harder than all the other apostles, then adds that it was not he, but the grace of God that was with him. Grace does not remove effort. It is the source of it.

Titus 3 gives the reason for all of it: not by works of righteousness which we did, but according to his mercy he saved us. The kindness and love of God appeared. If your day starts with a failure, it still starts with that kindness.

But by the grace of God I am what I am. His grace which was given to me was not futile, but I worked more than all of them; yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

1 Corinthians 15:10

But when the kindness of God our Savior and his love toward mankind appeared, not by works of righteousness which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior; that being justified by his grace, we might be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Titus 3:4-7
  • Begin each morning by receiving, before you try anything.

A prayer to say with these verses

Father, thank you for a gift I did not earn. Teach me to receive it and to live from it. Let your grace say no to what harms me and yes to what is good. Be my strength today. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

What is grace in the Bible?

Grace is God's undeserved favor. Ephesians 2:8-9 says we are saved by grace through faith, as a gift and not by works.

Does grace mean I can keep sinning?

Paul answers this in Romans 6:1-2: may it never be. Titus 2:11-12 says grace teaches us to say no to ungodliness and to live self-controlled lives.

Is there a limit to God's grace?

Romans 5:20 says that where sin abounded, grace abounded more, and John 1:16 speaks of grace upon grace. The text does not describe a limit.

How is grace different from forgiveness?

Forgiveness is one thing grace gives. Grace is the wider gift: mercy, new life, and strength for the work, as Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:10.

How do I receive grace?

Paul says through faith, which means trusting that God has already done it. Pray plainly, thank him, and keep walking, because the gift does not depend on how the day goes.
