Bible verses about identity in Christ

When you struggle with lust, the label you give yourself can become the loudest voice in your head. The Bible gives a different set of names, and they come from God rather than from your record. These verses come from the World English Bible. Pray the short prayer at the end.

Short answer

1 John 3:1 tells you what God has already called you.

John writes to believers: behold, how great a love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God. The statement is about what the Father has done, and it is addressed to people who are still learning to live it out.

1 John 3:1

Made on purpose

The Bible's account of who you are starts before your story went wrong. Psalm 139 says God formed your inward parts and knit you together in your mother's womb, and that you are fearfully and wonderfully made. Ephesians 1 says that God chose believers in Christ before the foundation of the world, and that in love he planned to adopt them as his children.

This is not a claim that everything you have done is fine. It is a claim that you are known, wanted and not an accident, and that your worst moments are not the first word about you.

For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.

Psalm 139:13-14

even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and without defect before him in love, having predestined us for adoption as children through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his desire,

Ephesians 1:4-5

Given the right to be his child

John's Gospel says that to as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God's children, to those who believe in his name. The children are born not of blood or of the will of the flesh but of God. Adoption is something done for you, not something you work up.

A child can behave badly and still be a child. The relationship is not renewed each day by performance.

But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God’s children, to those who believe in his name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

John 1:12-13

See how great a love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God! For this cause the world doesn’t know us, because it didn’t know him. Beloved, now we are children of God. It is not yet revealed what we will be; but we know that when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him just as he is.

1 John 3:1-2

New, though still growing

Paul tells the Corinthians that if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation: the old things have passed away, and look, all things have become new. In Galatians he says he has been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer he who lives but Christ who lives in him.

These are statements about what has happened, and they sit next to the daily work of growth. A new creation can still be learning to walk.

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.

2 Corinthians 5:17

I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself up for me.

Galatians 2:20
  • When you catch the old label, answer it aloud: I am his child.

Not a slave to fear

Romans 8 says that you did not receive a spirit of bondage leading again to fear, but the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out Abba, Father. The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs.

The word Abba is an intimate family word for father. You are invited to speak to God in that voice, including when you have just failed.

Practice makes this real. When you notice a harsh label, stop and say what God has said instead. Keep it simple and repeat it often. Over time the old names lose their weight, not because you forced them out, but because you have heard a better voice often enough to recognise it.

For you didn’t receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God; and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with him, that we may also be glorified with him.

Romans 8:15-17

A people with a purpose

Peter writes to scattered believers that they are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession. Then he gives the reason: that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people.

Ephesians 2 says we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. You have been made for something, and it is bigger than the fight.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. In the past, you were not a people, but now are God’s people, who had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

1 Peter 2:9-10

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.

Ephesians 2:10

A prayer to say with these verses

Father, thank you that you call me your child. Where I have believed lesser names, replace them with yours. Help me to live as someone you love, and to rest in what you have said. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

What does identity in Christ mean?

It means that who you are is defined by what God has done for you in Christ: you are his child (1 John 3:1), a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) and his workmanship (Ephesians 2:10).

Does my struggle with lust change who I am to God?

Romans 8:15-17 says you have received the Spirit of adoption and are a child and heir. The passage describes what God has given, not what you have earned.

How do I stop calling myself names like addict or pervert?

You can describe the behavior honestly without making it your name. Let the names God gives set the pattern. John 1:12 says he gave the right to become children of God to those who believe.

Is being a new creation instant?

The verse says the old has passed away and the new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17). The practice of growth takes time, and the standing is already given.

What if I do not feel like God's child?

Feelings vary. Romans 8:16 says the Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God. Ask him to make it real to you, and keep saying what he has said.
