Bible verses about guarding your heart

Most of what we do begins as a wish, a thought or a feeling long before it becomes an action. The Bible calls that inner place the heart, and it says it deserves your attention. These verses are about watching the heart and asking God to change it. They come from the World English Bible. Pray the short prayer at the end.

Short answer

Proverbs 4:23 says why the heart matters most.

A father speaks to his son: keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life. The heart here is the center of thought, desire and choice, and the instruction is to guard it as the source that everything else flows from.

Proverbs 4:23

The source of the stream

Proverbs 4 begins with a father urging his son to listen, to keep his words in the middle of his heart, and to hold them as life and health. Then comes the instruction to guard the heart, because from it come the springs of life. If the spring is muddy, the stream will be too.

To guard something is to pay attention to what comes near it. The same chapter adds that you should put away a deceitful mouth and let your eyes look straight ahead. These are practical steps.

My son, attend to my words. Turn your ear to my sayings. Let them not depart from your eyes. Keep them in the center of your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and health to their whole body. Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life.

Proverbs 4:20-23

An honest look inside

Jeremiah says the heart is deceitful above all things and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it? Then God answers that he searches the heart and tests the mind, to give every man according to his ways. We do not see ourselves clearly, and God does.

That is why David's prayer in Psalm 139 is good to borrow: search me, God, and know my heart, try me, and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way. Asking God to search you is safer than relying on your own checks.

The heart is deceitful above all things and it is exceedingly corrupt. Who can know it? “I, the LORD, search the mind. I try the heart, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.”

Jeremiah 17:9-10

Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.

Psalm 139:23-24
  • Pray the Psalm 139 request once a day, and then be quiet for a minute.

What comes out of the heart

Jesus says in Matthew 15 that what proceeds out of the mouth comes from the heart, and that evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts and slanders come from the heart. These are what defile a person, not eating with unwashed hands.

This can sound heavy, but it points the right way. If the trouble begins inside, then a clean outside will not be enough. It also means that real change is possible in the one place that matters most.

Guarding the heart also means being honest about what feeds it. Whatever you watch, read and dwell on tends to shape what you want. You do not need to fix every input at once. Choose one place where you notice a pull and change it this week, then ask God to keep the heart soft toward him while you do.

Don’t you understand that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the belly and then out of the body? But the things which proceed out of the mouth come out of the heart, and they defile the man. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies. These are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands doesn’t defile the man.

Matthew 15:17-20

The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings out that which is good, and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings out that which is evil, for out of the abundance of the heart, his mouth speaks.

Luke 6:45

God gives what he asks for

Proverbs 23 has a father say: my son, give me your heart, and let your eyes keep in my ways. Deuteronomy 6 says to love the LORD your God with all your heart, soul and might, and to keep these words on your heart.

Then the Bible shows God providing what it asks. Ezekiel 36 has God promise his people a new heart and a new spirit, and to take away the heart of stone and give a heart of flesh. In Psalm 86 David prays for an undivided heart: teach me your way, and I will walk in your truth.

My son, give me your heart; and let your eyes keep in my ways.

Proverbs 23:26

You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might. These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart;

Deuteronomy 6:5-6

I will also give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes. You will keep my ordinances and do them.

Ezekiel 36:26-27

Teach me your way, LORD. I will walk in your truth. Make my heart undivided to fear your name.

Psalm 86:11
  • Ask for an undivided heart. It is a prayer the Bible models.

A prayer to say with these verses

Lord, search my heart and show me what is there. Take away what is hard and give me a heart that is soft and undivided toward you. Help me to guard what comes in, and to trust you with what is hidden. Amen.
