Short answer

Yes. In Scripture lust is sin: Jesus speaks of gazing at a woman to lust after her (Matthew 5:28), and James traces how a desire that is welcomed grows into sin (James 1:14-15). Being tempted is not the sin, because Jesus was tempted in every way yet without sin (Hebrews 4:15). Desire between husband and wife is honored.

What Jesus said in Matthew 5

Jesus is quoting the commandment against adultery when he says: “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery;’ but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.” (Matthew 5:27-28, World English Bible)

The words that matter are gazes and to lust after her. The look has a purpose: it is aimed at feeding desire for someone who is not your spouse. Our reading is that Jesus is not describing the moment you notice that someone is attractive, but the choice to keep looking in order to want. He then speaks of acting seriously against whatever makes you stumble (Matthew 5:29-30). In another place he says that out of the heart come evil thoughts, adulteries and sexual sins (Matthew 15:19), so the sin is not limited to what a person does.

How James says desire becomes sin

James gives the sequence: “But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust and enticed. Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin. The sin, when it is full grown, produces death.” (James 1:14-15) Just before, he says that God tempts no one (James 1:13).

The verbs describe a path: drawn away, enticed, conceived, full grown. Our reading is that the sin begins where desire is welcomed and given room, not where it first appears. That is why Paul tells Timothy to “Flee from youthful lusts” (2 Timothy 2:22), which is something you do, not only something you feel.

Temptation is not the sin

Hebrews says: “For we don’t have a high priest who can’t be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15) Matthew 4:1 records that Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted. If being tempted were sin, he could not have been tempted without it.

Paul adds that “No temptation has taken you except what is common to man,” and that God “will with the temptation also make the way of escape” (1 Corinthians 10:13). A thought that arrives uninvited is the common experience. What counts is the next move: whether you keep looking, keep scrolling or turn away and pray.

Is lust a sin if you are single?

Yes, the same passages apply. Paul writes to all believers that “this is the will of God: your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality, that each one of you know how to control his own body in sanctification and honor, not in the passion of lust” (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5) Matthew 5:28 speaks of lusting after a woman, with no exception for being unmarried.

Scripture also treats strong desire as real. Paul tells the unmarried that “it’s better to marry than to burn with passion” (1 Corinthians 7:9). Our reading is that this does not call the desire itself shameful. It leaves the single person with the same question as everyone else: what do I do with it today?

Desire within marriage

The Bible does not treat desire as the enemy. Proverbs says to “Rejoice in the wife of your youth” and to “Be captivated always with her love” (Proverbs 5:18-19). Hebrews says: “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled” (Hebrews 13:4) Paul tells husbands and wives to give each other the affection owed (1 Corinthians 7:3).

The warnings are aimed at desire fed toward someone else: the gaze of Matthew 5:28, and Job’s covenant with his eyes (Job 31:1). Christians reading these passages in different church traditions will have more to say about details; a pastor who knows your situation is the right person to ask.

Where to go from here

If you have been feeding lust, the Bible’s answer is not to hide. John writes: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9) Paul says: “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). Draw near “with boldness to the throne of grace” (Hebrews 4:16).

Confession is also a human act. Our advice is to tell one trusted person, such as a pastor, a counselor or a friend, and to read our plan for the practical side in how to quit lust.
