Short answer

The Monash University FODMAP Diet app is the food guide from the research team that developed the diet, and none of the apps here replaces its food data. If you want something to log meals and symptoms, run reintroduction and print a report, add an app built for that and keep Monash for lookups.

Choose Gutli if

The hard part for you is the daily log, reintroduction one group at a time, and a report for your clinician.

Choose the Monash app if

You mainly need its food guide, certified product list and recipes from the research team.

What the Monash app is built to do

The Monash FODMAP Diet app comes from the research team at Monash University, and its listing describes it as the companion to the diet they developed. It holds a food guide that rates hundreds of foods with a traffic light system, a list of branded products certified by Monash as low FODMAP, and over 70 recipes. It also has tutorials for the three steps of the diet and a shopping list where you can add notes to individual foods.

It includes a diary too. You record food eaten, IBS symptoms, bowel habits and stress levels, and the listing says the diary guides you through step 2, reintroduction. As of October 1, 2026 the App Store shows a price of $7.99, a 4.2 rating from 2,574 ratings, and a last update on March 12, 2026.

Why people look for something else

You might want a cheaper or faster way to look up foods, more support from a person, or a stronger log than a food guide with a diary attached. The Monash listing does not mention pattern analysis, clinician reports or coaching, so if you want those, you will need another tool. Its listing puts the food guide first.

It also helps to separate lookup from logging. Lookup is a quick question: is this food low, moderate or high, and how much is a serving. Logging is a habit you keep for weeks: what you ate, how you felt, and what changed when you tested one group. Different apps are stronger at each.

Three alternatives and where each is stronger

Fast FODMAP Lookup & Learn from Recovery Record is free on the US App Store, with a 4.7 rating from 21,311 ratings. Its listing says it focuses on fast incremental search, works offline for search, and adds learning games, a weekly meal planner and a link to your dietitian. If your main need is quick lookups at no cost, it is a clear option, and its listing is the source for its speed claims.

Cara Care: IBS, FODMAP Tracker from HiDoc Technologies is free, rated 4.8 from 4,655 ratings. It offers a 12-week low FODMAP program with unlimited text chat with a personal dietitian, plus food, symptom and stool tracking. Unlimited chat with a dietitian is something none of the other listings here describe; Fast FODMAP lists linking with your dietitian. The listing shows a last update of October 27, 2020, so check that it works on your phone before you rely on it.

mySymptoms Food Diary from SkyGazer Labs is free to download, rated 4.6 from 4,045 ratings, and runs on a subscription after a 7-day free trial. Its listing describes barcode scanning, correlation analysis between foods and symptoms, PDF and CSV export, and sharing with a clinician. It is not limited to FODMAPs, so it suits people tracking other conditions as well.

Where Gutli fits

Gutli is a meal, symptom and low FODMAP protocol journal for iPhone. You log a meal with time, ingredients, grams, notes and an optional photo, with a low, moderate or high portion reference. You check in on pain, bloating, nausea, energy and bowel movements using the Bristol Stool Chart, and see meals and symptoms together on one timeline and calendar.

It follows the protocol too. Elimination, reintroduction and maintenance are separate phases, and you decide when to move between them. In reintroduction you record the food, dose, duration and response for each FODMAP group, one at a time. Patterns appear with their confidence shown. Gutli records and shows patterns; it does not diagnose.

Your meals and symptoms stay on your iPhone and never go to iCloud. An exported backup moves them to a new phone, and a PDF or CSV report is ready for your appointment.

How to choose

If you only want to know what a food scores, the Monash app or Fast FODMAP will serve you, and Fast FODMAP costs nothing. If you want text chat with a dietitian, Cara Care is the only app here whose listing offers it. If you track many conditions, or want a food database with barcodes, mySymptoms is built for that.

If you are about to start elimination, or you are partway through and need to test groups one at a time without losing track, a journal built around the protocol is the better fit. You can use two apps: a reference for lookups and a journal for the weeks of logging. Whichever you use, take the results to a clinician, because a log is a record and not a medical opinion.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Monash FODMAP app free?

No. The US App Store listing shows $7.99 as of October 1, 2026. Prices can change, so check the listing.

Is there a free alternative to the Monash app?

Yes. Fast FODMAP Lookup & Learn and Cara Care are listed as free, and mySymptoms is free to download with a subscription after a 7-day trial.

Can I use Gutli instead of the Monash app?

Gutli is a journal for logging meals, symptoms and reintroduction, with a portion-aware food reference. It does not replace the Monash food guide, certified product list or recipes, so you can use both.

Which app can connect me with a dietitian?

Cara Care lists unlimited text chat with a personal dietitian in its 12-week program. Fast FODMAP says you can link with your dietitian.

Can an app tell me which foods trigger my IBS?

An app can show patterns between what you ate and how you felt, but it cannot diagnose. Review patterns and any diet changes with a clinician or dietitian.

Our pick

Gutli, for the weeks of logging and reintroduction

The Monash app, Fast FODMAP and Cara Care are stronger on food data, free lookups and dietitian chat, and Gutli does not replace them. Gutli is for the moment you start the protocol and need to log each meal and symptom, test one FODMAP group at a time, and walk into your appointment with a clear report. Keep a lookup app beside it if you like.

  • Meals with portions and symptom and Bristol check-ins
  • Reintroduction recorded one FODMAP group at a time
